Privy: Onboard Everyone

Blockchain currently faces a major hurdle: onboarding. Despite crypto’s rising popularity, on-chain activity lags behind centralized exchange users. This resistance in adoption mainly stems from the need to master tools like extensions, private keys, and mnemonics, as well as the promise of being solely responsible for managing funds, which intimidates many newcomers.

Though adopters can find wallets simpler for authentication than classical connection methods, we must acknowledge that the initial wallet setup remains a tough barrier.

A New Way to Connect

@privy_io is set to tackle this problem: enabling the use of popular authentication methods like signing in with @Google, Privy removes the need to download anything and lets users instantly try your app!

A login screen simply pops up in a separate browser window, allowing users to select their preferred authentication method from a wide variety of options. Wallet fans don’t need to worry, as they can still connect using their existing wallets.

Once the authentication method is selected, Privy will create your smart wallet—an account with enhanced features compared to a traditional wallet. The provider for the smart wallet is chosen by the app developer from a range of well-reputed options, such as @coinbase's smart wallet, @safe, @biconomy, or @AlchemyPlatform's LightAccount.

Privy then combines the use of these smart wallets with a special key management system that splits a private key into three shares:

  • A Device Share, stored on the user's device.
  • An Auth Share, stored by Privy and only accessible with valid user authentication.
  • A Recovery Share, used to recover the wallet on new devices.

This addresses the recovery of funds, a major pain point in blockchains today! In addition, Privy offers Server Sessions, which let users grant permission to manage a portion of their funds for a specific timeframe. This ensures a seamless app experience by eliminating distracting popups, while enforced rules keep everything running as intended by the user. Finally, Privy allows developers to integrate their preferred paymaster, freeing users from gas fees concerns.

Seamless Integration with Abstract

The @AbstractChain has made Privy its default provider for wallet signing via the Abstract Global Wallet (AGW), a versatile smart wallet that facilitates integration for developers and onboarding for users. This integration has been a key driver in Abstract's rapid growth, which recently surpassed over one million Abstract Global Wallets created since launch.

Additionally, pushing for the AGW has made Abstract rethink the whole blockchain experience. The team has crafted the Abstract Portal as the ideal companion to the AGW, functioning as an inventory window akin to those in traditional wallets, allowing you to manage all your assets in one place! Try out Abstract dApps and see how simple the onboarding is compared to others; the AGW really feels like the missing piece to consumer crypto.

Headed for success

While Privy continues to enhance its product, the company recently announced its latest fundraising round, with participation from major venture capital firms such as @cbventures, @paradigm, @sequoia, and others. This round has pushed Privy's total fundraising to over $40 million USD, positioning the company for a strong future.

For Developers

Privy is a breeze to integrate, thanks to its various software development kits (SDKs), including a React SDK for web, React Native and Swift SDKs for mobile, and its @unity SDK for game development.

For Abstract developers, it's even easier: just install the Abstract Global Wallet SDK, which handles everything for you and allows you to use familiar functions from viem and wagmi (see @wevm_dev). And since Abstract prioritizes this wallet's distribution, you don’t need additional messy code to support more wallets.

The collaboration between Privy and Abstract ensures that developers have the best possible experience, as do users. Both teams are working together to make the AGW as good as a wallet can be, recently adding major security features like transaction simulations in collaboration with @blockaid_.
